Formula & methodology
Each year: balance = balance × (1 + expected return) + (Super Guarantee % × OTE). The 12.0% rate used as the default is the statutory Super Guarantee rate for FY 2025-26 — check the ATO for the current rate in future years, since it has risen in stages.
Example: $80,000 OTE, 12% Super Guarantee, $0 starting balance, 7% expected return over 20 years → a projected balance of about $393,557.
Quick reference
| OTE / salary | SG rate | 10 years | 20 years | 30 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $80,000 | 12% | $132,638 | $393,557 | $906,824 |

Frequently asked questions
Is 12% the maximum my employer will contribute?
It's the statutory minimum (the Superannuation Guarantee) — some employers contribute more, and you can also make additional voluntary or salary-sacrifice contributions on top.
Is the projected return guaranteed?
No — actual super fund returns depend on market performance and which investment option you're in; 7% is a commonly used long-term assumption, not a promise.
