Formula & methodology
Each year: balance = balance × (1 + expected return) + (your contribution % + matched employer %) × salary. Employer match is capped at the match percentage you enter, applied only up to your own contribution rate.
Example: $75,000 salary, 6% own contribution, 3% employer match, $0 starting balance, 7% expected return over 25 years → a projected balance of about $426,931.
Quick reference
| Salary | Own + match | 10 years | 20 years | 30 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $75,000 | 6% + 3% match | $93,261 | $276,720 | $637,610 |

Frequently asked questions
Is the expected return guaranteed?
No — 401(k) growth depends on market performance of the funds you're invested in. 7% is a commonly used long-term average assumption, not a promise.
Does this account for the annual IRS contribution limit?
No — it simply projects your entered contribution rate. Check the current-year IRS 401(k) contribution limit separately if your contribution amount might exceed it.
